History

Roxbury Township’s history dates back to the 1600s. The Nariticong clan of the Delaware Indian Nation once called this area home, with a large village on Halsey Island and a settlement on the east shore of Lake Hopatcong. In1630s, the Dutch made their way to northern New Jersey and set up some trading outposts until the English took over the colony in 1664.

In 1708, the Indians sold a large piece of land which included what is now Roxbury Township, to white settlers. These settlers were part of a Christian group known as Rogerenes, founded by John Rogers of Connecticut. They established homes in the future Landing, with the center of the settlement at Mountain Pond.

Fast forward to 1740, and Roxbury Township was officially incorporated as the fourth township in Morris County. At that time, it included not only the present-day township but also the future Chester Borough, Chester Township, Mt. Arlington, Mt. Olive Township, Netcong Borough, and Washington Township, as well as parts of Hopatcong Borough and Stanhope.
